Highland games at Rural Hill Farm give a glimpse of Scotland, Ireland
HUNTERSVILLE NC - APRIL 21-23, 2006
Mad Max McDougald was armed to the hilt, the Scottish pirate carrying a hatchet, a sword and three knives hidden about his body.
See audio-enhanced slide show presentation here.
Dressed in a black tri-corner hat and wearing an eye patch along with his Scottish kilt, it was 49-year-old Nathaniel Ellis-Maxwell McDougald III who brought Mad Max to life as he made his way through the Loch Norman Highland Games on Saturday.
He’s attended 12 of the past 13 events in Huntersville, dressing as various Scottish characters, and this day he chose the guise of a pirate.
“Most of the pirates were Scotsman or Irish,” McDougald said.
With his character of Max a returning favorite at the games, many people called to him as they passed through the rainy festival grounds.
Bagpipes played through the air, with more than 20 bagpipe bands on the field. A fiddle could be heard in one distant tent. In another tent a group of girls began a Highland dance, as they spun around the stage.

CROWN POINT: Police officers raise money for trip to capital
“We think we are pretty good, and it is a lot of fun for us,” said Ray Borchert, president of the pipe band.
Before members could don their brown and gold kilts — which match many members’ Lake County uniforms — they had to get permission from Scotland’s Buchanan clan. Members of the group also serve on the Crown Point, Lake Station, Thornton and Flossmoor police departments.
…
“It’s not cheap,” he said. “The kilt is about $500 because of the pleating, and the bagpipes cost about $2,000 each.
“Every man pays for his own, and it gets expensive. But it’s worth it. It is a throw back in history. It’s a tradition for law enforcement to wear the plaid, and we are proud to do it.”

Warm sunshine and record attendance numbers poured onto the Lyon College campus at the 27th annual Arkansas Scottish Festival during its three-day run Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
Jimmy Bell, Lyon’s director of Scottish Heritage, estimated that 10,000 people attended the event this year, up from last year’s previous record of 8,000.
“I believe 10,000 was the most ever at this festival,” he said. “All the vendors were very happy. Some even wanted to pay me now for next year’s spot.”
The festival featured bagpipers, clans, dancers, drummers, falconry exhibitions, athletics, sheepdog demonstrations and musical entertainment. Vendor booths offered everything from Scottish and American foods to clan regalia, kilts and Claiborne broadswords.

Originally from Falkirk, Stuart started playing at the age of 8 years old and went on to play in Grade One Pipe Bands by the time he was thirteen, including the famous McNaughtons Vale of Atholl Pipe Band and The Royal Burgh of Stirling Pipe Band.
After winning nearly all the major juvenile solo Bagpiping Championships he played on the much respected album, “Young Pipers of Scotland” - at the age of just 17. His achievements continued when at 18 he became one of the youngest ever Pipe Majors.
