RIDGEFIELD – Beloved bagpiper player and Danbury Fair mall carousel operator Malcolm Davie died Friday at age 86.
“Not enough people will miss Malcolm Davie,” First Selectman Rudy Marconi said.

“When I heard of his death, I thought of the landmarks that have been lost around town, buildings torn down to make way for new. You don’t realize right away that we’ve lost a little piece of our town.

“That’s the way I feel about losing Malcolm.”

Originally from Ontario, Canada, Davie moved to Ridgefield 25 years ago. He soon became a staple around town, playing the bagpipes at events and serving as building supervisor at the Yanity Gym for Parks and Recreation.

They just head to someplace new, like, say, Colorado. And they are dispatched to the sound of bagpipe music. … Now, more about that bagpipe music. …

Now, more about that bagpipe music. The tradition of bagpipes playing at fire-department funerals in the United States goes back more than 150 years, when Irish immigrants made up a large percentage of firefighters in East Coast cities. We don’t know for sure, but apparently the decommissioning of an old firetruck is somewhat like a funeral.

He had a deep interest in Highland culture, particularly in the music of the Highland bagpipe. In the 1930s, he asked the great pipe major Willie Ross, who was the head of the army school of piping at Edinburgh Castle, to give him lessons. Willie at first declined on the basis that he already had too many pupils, but when he was informed that Pat was the representative for Sandeman whisky, he took him on.

FORT LOUDON, PA. - As ominous clouds rolled over the mountains around the fort, bagpipe music and the smell of fire-cooked meat caught the wind and pushed their way into lightweight, cream-colored tents that dotted the field.

Children in traditional garb darted around adults wearing the colors of Scottish clansmen and clanswomen. Bayonets and crude dinnerware rested on tables at tent entrances.
Only the sight of a teenager snapping a picture with a cell phone reminded visitors that this was a re-enactment and not the 1700s.
