Steven McWhirter from SFU has taken out the world Solo drumming Championships held in Monkstown Norther Ireland,

Jim Kilpatrick, 16-time-winner of the House of Edgar-Shotts & Dykehead Pipe Band took 2nd place with Eric Ward third.

NZ’s own Jeremy McLaughlin got 8th in his heat, the first time he has competed at this competiton,

Image The Piobaireachd Society recommends the following lists of set tunes for competition in 2007

Competitors will submit four tunes from the above list, one of which they will be required to play.

PS = Piobaireachd Society Collection. K = Kilberry Book of Ceol Mor

Competitors are not restricted to the settings or styles in the books mentioned above, and may play any other setting or style, provided that the judges may take into consideration the authenticity and merits of the setting or style submitted.

Competitors are advised to give advance notice to the judges should they intend to play settings or styles not contained in the Piobaireachd Society Collection or the Kilberry Book.

Altogether different tunes known by the same or similar names will not be accepted as alternatives.

This announcement is made by the Piobaireachd Society to ensure earliest publication. It is without prejudice to any arrangements made by either the Argyllshire Gathering or the Northern Meeting.

Wm. Livingstone Sr. Memorial Invitational Competition

Please note that ALL EVENTS are being held in the Sergeants Mess at the Foote Armouries, on James Street North in Hamilton, Ontario. With the exception of the Wm Livingstone Piping Contest and the Agnew-Harrison Drumming Contest, all events are held on the second Friday on each month and will commence at 7:30 pm. Please contact a member of the executive with any additional questions.

ImageCeol Mor Software and Publishing Ltd are a small software and publishing company based in Scotland, UK. They develop Windows based music notation software for traditional music instruments such as the Highland Bagpipe and Pipe Band Drumming. They have existing products on the market - PiobMaster 2.3 and DrumScriobh 2.0. They are underway to complete the development of our new upgrade to their bagpipe notation application PiobMaster to bring it to version 3.0. Little is known about the new features at this time, any new infomation will be posted.

Jordan McKay Rowley, 14, competed in a bagpipe competition this past weekend at the annual Ventura, CA, Scottish Highland Games. Rowley, who has played the pipes since age 9 under the instruction of Campbell Naismith, won first place while competing against almost 20 pipers from around the United States. He played a “Piobaireached,” a slow, long Scottish tune.

The Transcona and District Pipe Band has been teaching youth the fine art of playing the bagpipes and drums for over 20 years. Band members - boys and girls - range in age from 10 to 18 years, and students sometimes begin even younger. The band is always looking for new students to learn to play these instruments and join the band on parade and in competition.

The St. Andrew’s Society of Winnipeg Pipe Band is having a Ceilidh on Saturday November 4, 2006 at the Elmwood Legion, 920 Nairn Ave. Doors open at 8pm, and the fun lasts until 1am. Tickets are $10 and available from any band member. The Ceilidh will feature performances by the Pipe Band and guest performers. Bring your instruments and join us!

The Ugandan dictator Idi Amin was a fan of Hitler, a murderer of 300,000 and perhaps even a cannibal. But one thing he was not - the bumbling buffoon much of the world made him out to be.

The Last of Scotland, the British Oscar hope that opened the 50th London Film Festival on October 18, exposes the calculating charm that allowed Amin to get away with it all.

He had an odd affinity for the Scottish nation - he employed a personal bagpipe player and took to wearing kilts.

ST. PETERSBURG - The Battlefield Band will perform on Saturday, Nov. 4, 7 p.m., at the Palladium Theater. Tickets are $16 to $20.

Inspired by their rich heritage of Celtic music and fired by the strength of today’s Scottish cultural scene, which they have done much to create and fuel, the Battlefield Band performs music of rare passion and joy under the banner “Forward With Scotland’s Past.”

They have mixed the old songs with new, self penned material, playing them on a unique fusion of ancient and modern instruments such as bagpipe, fiddle, synthesizer, guitar, cittern, flute, bodhran and accordion…
