Veteran bagpiper to lead Orland Park’s winter lessons
After several weeks of learning finger placement, note value and timing, the students in Terry McHugh’s bagpipe class advanced to their first tune, “Amazing Grace.”
Each of the students in McHugh’s fall class with the Orland Park Recreation Department took turns playing parts of the song while the others followed along, silently moving their fingers along their practice chanters.
“This is a song that everyone knows and it’s one of the easiest to play,” McHugh said.
Similar in appearance to the recorder, the practice chanter is a double reed woodwind instrument on which students learn and practice.

Akron Ohio News – Hoban Pipers signaling new sound

Archbishop Hoban High School’s music program is marching to the beat of a slightly different sound with the formation of the Bagpipe Corps — the Hoban Pipers Pride.
The corps, started last year by Brother Phillip Smith, the band’s leader, currently consists of seven pipers and four percussionists, who all wear traditional clothing — MacPherson plaid, quilts, white shirts handmade by a teacher, caps, ties, a sporran and knee-length socks.
The complete outfit costs about $200, which is paid for by each student, but the $900 bagpipes are being supplied courtesy of the Ancient Order of Hibernians AOH St. Brendan Division. The AOH is an Irish Catholic cultural organization organized in 1836 and dedicated to preserving the history and integrity of the Irish people in America.
Bagpipe Playing Santa
CHRISTMAS shoppers were in for a double treat on Saturday when a bagpipe playing Santa and his elfin helper took to the streets of Bexhill to play cheery music and distribute chocolates.
Many people came out of shops to enjoy the proceedings and one shopper said: “It’s not every day you see Santa playing bagpipes is it?”
Bagpipe busker arrested for ‘distressing’ music | Confessions of a Recovering Pharisee

Police told Shaun Cartwright, 38, his piping had annoyed members of the public and detained him for a breach of the peace. His bagpipes were seized as he was handcuffed and driven to a police station, although he was later released and told it was not in the public interest to press charges.

The Bagpipe Boy

Jacob Minogue is “the bagpipe boy” at Colonial Forge High School, a red-haired, fair-skinned Irish lad who loves the classic sound of this ancient instrument.
The 16-year-old has been taking bagpipe les-sons for almost four years. He studied for a year and a half before he earned the right to play on real pipes, and he’s proud of his custom-made set from Scotland.
Before he could put the instrument over his shoulder, he used a practice chanter. The device looks like the recorder that kids first play in elementary school–and sounds a little like a duck, according to Jacob.
Mastering the bagpipes isn’t easy, and Jacob would agree that he needs more practice.
So would his teacher, Dr. Ray Scott, who directs the University of Mary Washington’s Eagle Pipe Band.
Scott estimates that only one of every 10 students will be able to play several tunes on the bagpipes.

85 glorious years for Kilrea Pipe Band
KILREA Pipe Band is celebrating its 85 anniversary.
Members and friends met in Kilrea Orange Hall to mark the very special milestone for an anniversary meal.
After an excellent dinner, there was time to reminisce about years gone by. Band members were taken back to 1924 thanks to a slideshow where they got to view the band as it was back then.
Kilrea Pipe Band was formed by Kilrea Apprentice Boys L.O.L. 366, after some young men decided to learn how to play the bagpipes.

Blessing of the tartans – SGVTribune.com

It’s that time of the year again: Get out your tartans, it’s St. Andrew’s Day.
Actually, St. Andrew’s Day was on Nov. 30. But proud Scots in the Valley will have another chance this Sunday, Dec. 7, to celebrate the patron saint of Scotland during the Kirkin’ Christmas service at the Community Presbyterian Church in West Covina.
The church’s pastor Rev. Glen Thorp and his father-in-law Rev. Lee Stewart will be at the altar to bless the tartans of clans from Granada Hills to Redlands to Orange County.
This is the third year that the pastors will be churching the tartans – or kirkin’ the tartans, to use the Scottish phrase.
The kirkin’ of the tartans is a Scottish-American tradition started in the 1940s by Peter Marshall, a chaplain of the United States Senate.
Ally is the RAF’s top solo piper – Northern Times
Corporal Ally MacDonald, originally from Altnaharra and now stationed at RAF Lossiemouth, entered this year’s championships as a soloist and came away as the RAF solo champion piper 2008. The award is given to the individual with the best combined score from the open march, strathspey and reel section and the open piobaireachd.
This was the first time Ally (36) had entered the contest, even though he has been in the RAF for eight years and has played the pipes since he was a child. He began learning the pipes aged about eight whilst attending Altnaharra Primary School and then Golspie High School. He was taught by the late Charlie O’Brien, ex-5th Seaforth Highlanders’ Pipe Major. Ally moved to Caithness in 1993 and joined the RAF in 2000. Corporal MacDonald now lives in Lossiemouth with his wife and three children.
Of his success at the championships, he said: “I haven’t entered any championships for a few years as I haven’t really had the time. But this year I was able to, and coming away as the solo champion piper was a surprise.”
Artist of the week: James Ruhf — themorningcall.com
Why do bagpipers always march when they play? Theyre trying to get away from the sound, too
James Ruhf happily shares bagpipe jokes. Although some people poke fun at the pipes, they are loved by many.
Ruhf has been a professional piper for 15 years, and has performed at about 1,500 funerals, 900 weddings and many other events and educational presentations. He says he has played Amazing Grace about a million times.
Ruhf is the director and pipe major of the City of Bethlehem Bagpipe Band and Drum Corps. The four-year-old group, originally connected with Celtic Classic, is a staple of local parades and civic events.

redpipes – das Instrument – der Dudelsack – die elektronische Bagpipe

redpipe - an electronic bagpipe suitable for stage performance
Equipped with a qualitiy chanter from McCallum Bagpipes, combined with unique electronics and a pressure sensitive leather bag, the redpipe provides the look and feel of a real bagpipe.
Stuart Cassells, lead piper of the Red Hot Chilli Pipers (RHCP), is very enthusiastic about the redpipe;
quote “ the redpipe is absolutely fantastic. It’s easy to work with. I think the redpipe is the first electronic bagpipe that’s suitable for performance. It’s easy to play together. We’ll use it in the future to get the flexibility to change keys and the sound of the bagpipe. That will make us a bigger, bigger show.”
