Local bagpipe maker keeps the craft alive – The Sarnia Observer – Ontario, CA: “Wayne Fisher argues that people who say they don’t like bagpipes haven’t given them a chance.
Highland pipes, like the ones the Forest area man makes in his workshop, are known to have a polarizing quality.
Several years ago a local band named an album ‘No One Cries When You Cut Up A Bagpipe.’
Like other pipers, Fisher has heard people say they’re not fans of the ancient instrument.
‘I think 90 per cent of them have not heard them played properly,’ he said ‘or taken the time to listen to them.’
Fisher began playing the bagpipes in 1998 and took over as pipe major of the Forest Legion Pipe Band in 2003.
He began down the road to making his own pipes after agreeing to look after overflow repairs for a friend who was a bagpipe maker.
‘He was at the point where he was overrun with work,’ Fisher said.
A millwright by trade, Fisher was looking for something to fill in the gaps when things were slow at his day job.”
