When we did the review of Poitín’s CD Hot Days, I admitted that the envelope from Czech Republic is one of my favorite pieces of Celtophilia memorabilia. In light of that, I wanted us to talk to these guys a little bit about being a Celtic band in their country, and about their style in general. The band was so excited to talk to Bonnie and I that they got together and had a big Celtophilia Answering Party, (okay, that’s not what happened, but that’s what I like to pretend.) They put together some amazing answers, and I hope you all enjoy them as much as I did.

After 21 years of being a couple, George Takei and Brad Altman tied the knot at the Japanese American National Museum in Little Tokyo at their public wedding yesterday. They first made their appearance by stepping out together singing “One Singular Sensation” from “A Chorus Line” before entering a circle of yellow roses and lilies and sharing a traditional Japanese tea ceremony before being wed by a Buddhist priest. They exchanged their own vows and used Native American wedding bands proceeded by a bagpipe procession.

Berkeley protesters take note: put down your picket signs and loudspeakers and pull out your bagpipes.
In an odd spectacle of bagpipe serenading and pro-Proposition 8 pamphleting this past Monday, a group of very stern-looking, red cap-sporting male members of The American Society for the Defense of Tradition, Family and Property invaded the Berkeley campus to tell us all why we should stop being gay.

As a music education major about a decade ago at the University of Akron, Kate Wiley’s studies required she learned to play almost every musical instrument under the sun.
So when it came time to try out the bagpipe, the Litchfield Township native didn’t flinch.

Spring is almost officially starting with comet flying on the hills of Valpo and everybody preparing to celebrate the chilean independence holidays within a fortnight
At the same time, the few bagpipers in town and surrounding areas are gathering to play music with their bagpipes in the outdoors. Two well organised pipebands are in town, both celebrating spanish folk bagpipe traditions. The Valparaiso asturian pipeband with their long single drone and closed chantered bagpipes (gaita asturiana) and the galician Remembranzas de Galicia pipeband with their traditional open chantered galician gaitas….
These bagpipes might look somewhat alike but they sound different because of their respective distinct reeds (palleta and pajuela) and chanters. So I am also playing galician style in the outdoors with a friend at the Baron docks (photo above). Tomorrow night many of these pipers will gather to celebrate the 4th Irlandes bar birthday….
so if you hear them just relax they might be celebrating with green beer and other stronger brews.

Brother from Australia and Albannach from Scotland return to the festival this year. New to the festival is the Colorado Celtic rock and roll band, Angus Mohr — four rockers from Estes Park to Front Range locations.
Angus Mohr
Angus Mohr creates an emotionally charged performance, blending Celtic music with rock, playing original and traditional songs. But there’s nothing traditional about Angus Mohr. Made up of a band with a background in rock and blues, bass guitarist Paul McDaniel took his Scottish heritage, his local exposure to the Longs Peak Scottish Irish Festival and added his son Matthew’s bagpipe playing to the existing rock band four years ago. Their presence at the festival this year is a testament to a commitment to the genre and a lot of hard work.

The Argyllshire Gathering was founded in 1871, and its piping competitions seem to have started in 1873. The Highland Society of London first presented its Gold Medal for piobaireachd in that year, and the list of past winners includes some very famous names. These include Calum Piobaire, John Maccoll, G. S. MacLennan and D. R. MacLennan, both the Bobs of Balmoral, Wille Ross, Donald MacPherson, to name but a few. A small handfull, ten in number, have achieved the rare distinction of winning the Gold Medal at both Oban and Inverness in the same year.

Heavy athletics is a major part of the Ligonier Highland Games, but the day is about much more than the caber toss, the stone put and the hammer throw.
Its a celebration of all things Scottish, and with this years 50th anniversary observance of the games, theres sure to be a lot of celebrating at Idlewild Park. Two young musical groups, MacTalla Mor and Maidens IV, both made up of family members, will give a contemporary twist to the event that pays homage to Scotland and Scottish traditions.
