British Gen. Trench attacks the French and Irish left behind by Humbert to hold Killela.

British General Trench launches an attack on French and Irish forces left behind by General Humbert to hold Killala, County Mayo, during the 1798 Rebellion. The defenders—mainly Irish rebels—are overwhelmed. Approximately 300 Irish are killed, including many who are reportedly cut down while attempting to surrender. The assault marks the brutal suppression of the last pockets of resistance following Humbert’s earlier defeat at Ballinamuck, and underscores the ruthless British response to the rebellion in Connacht.
