Battle of Tranent

Battle of Tranent

Battle of Tranent — In August 1797, a demonstration against conscription under the Militia Act in Tranent, East Lothian, Scotland, turns deadly when it is forcibly suppressed by government forces, including the Cinque Ports Dragoons and the East Lothian Yeomanry. Protesters — many of them women — had gathered to oppose the forced enlistment of local men. The confrontation ends with at least 12 civilians killed, making it one of the most tragic episodes of anti-conscription protest in Scottish history.
