In 1263, the Norwegian King Haakon the Old used Kirkwall as a base for his fruitless attempt to maintain Norse rule over the Western Isles. Hakon IV (1204-December 15, 1263), also called Haakon the Old, was declared to be the son of Hakon III of Norway, the leader of the Birkebeiner, who had seized control over large parts of Norway in 1202.

Welsh forces under Meredudd ap Rhys and Meredudd ab Owain ambush a force of English soldiers and Welsh collaborators at Pont ar Gothi (modern Pontargothi), in Carmarthenshire. The three-day battle results in a decisive Welsh victory, with approximately 3,000 of the opposing force killed. This event forms part of the broader resistance against Anglo-Norman expansion into Wales during the medieval period.

King Harald of the Isle of Man was the son of his predecessor, King Olaf II of the Isle of Man. He rose to power in the 1237 after his fathers death. His father had acquired a sizable empire during his rule, spanning many islands. Finding himself in control of this, Harald decided to tour his dominion and left his cousin Laglan as a steward in his absence. Llywelyn ab Iorwerth (c. 1173–April 11, 1240) was a Prince of Gwynedd: and eventually ruler over much of Wales. Llywelyn was a decendant of the senior line of Rhodri Mawr, thus a member of the princely house of Aberffraw. Although he is often referred to as a Prince of Wales, his official title was Prince of Aberffraw and Lord of Snowdonia (the first official Prince of Wales was his son, Dafydd). He was also known as Llywelyn the Great or, in Welsh, Llywelyn Fawr, one of only two Welsh rulers to bear this title, the other being Rhodri the Great.

Laurence O'Toole is canonized by Pope Honorius III

Lorcán Ua Tuathail, known in English as Laurence O’Toole and in French as Laurent d’Eu (1128 – 14 November 1180), was Archbishop of Dublin at the time of the Norman invasion of Ireland. Lorcán played a prominent role in the Irish Church Reform Movement of the 12th century and mediated between the parties during and after the invasion. He was canonised in 1225 by Pope Honorius III.
