The Irish Convention was an assembly which sat in Dublin, Ireland from July 1917 until March 1918 to address the Irish question and other constitutional problems relating to an early enactment of self-government for Ireland, to debate its wider future, discuss and come to an understanding on recommendations as to the best manner and means this goal could be achieved.

Éamon de Valera wins election to Parliament
On 10 July 1917, he was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for East Clare (the constituency which he represented until 1959) in a by-election caused by the death of the previous incumbent Willie Redmond, brother of the Irish Party leader John Redmond,who had died fighting in World War I.

General Sir John French, newly appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland (also known as Viceroy), orders the arrest of Sinn Féin leaders based on mistaken intelligence suggesting their involvement in a pro-German plot during World War I. This event, known as the “German Plot”, leads to the arrest and internment of over 70 Sinn Féin members, including Éamon de Valera, further increasing public sympathy for the movement and radicalizing Irish nationalist opinion.
