Branch 58 Royal Canadian Legion Pipes and Drums

The Pipes and Drums of Branch 58 Royal Canadian Legion was founded in 1927, the same year the Branch received its charter and one year after the founding of the Legion nationally. Thus, with over 96 years of continuous operation, it is one of the oldest, if not “the oldest,” Legion pipe bands in Canada. The founding pipe major was John (Jock) MacFarlane.

Thorold Pipe Band

On an April evening in 1986, six men held a meeting in a home in Thorold, Ontario, and agreed to establish The Thorold Pipe Band, the first musical organization of its kind ever in the history of the city. They had been invited to this meeting by the home’s owner, Mr. James (Jimmy) V. Greig and his friend and pupil Mitchell McDowell. Establishing a pipe band in their hometown had long been a dream of Greig and McDowell, and both men were deeply gratified to see it begin to come to fruition.

Since its initial start, the band has moved forward on its own to become a strong organization. The band performs for a wide variety of functions on a regular basis: Legion duties / parades, community parades, Scottish festivals, corporate events, weddings and funerals, and various other occasions as requested.
