'Our dad was an unsung hero': Wick ceremony marks 80th anniversary of VJ Day

An “unsung hero” from Wick was remembered as part of a Victory over Japan commemoration on what would have been his 105th birthday.

Donnie Mackay was a well-known local businessman who ran the Ensign Shop in High Street with his wife Jean for more than 30 years.

Mr Mackay’s World War II service included a spell in Karachi, then part of India, helping to support RAF flights during the Burma campaign.

His eldest son Dan Mackay and daughter Eswyl Fell were among those who placed poppy crosses during a VJ Day 80th anniversary ceremony on Friday morning.

It was organised by the Wick, Canisbay and Latheron branch of the Royal British Legion Scotland in the garden of remembrance outside Wick Town Hall.
